Pousada da Horta - Converted 16th-century fortress
Faial, one of the most beautiful of the Azores islands, is known for its sunny climate, and was called Ilha Azul (‘Blue Island’) by the poet Raul Brandão on account of the swathes of hydrangeas that bloom there in the summer.
This comfortable Pousada, with its elegantly furnished rooms and its swimming pool, overlooks Horta, the island’s main town. Formerly an inn, the Pousada is located within the 16th-century fortress of Santa Cruz, and there are magnificent views across the marina to the amazing Pico Island, with its spectacular volcano, Ponta de Pico, the highest peak on Portuguese territory.
The Pousada’s seasonal outdoor pool overlooks the marina and guests can also enjoy the wonderful views with a drink on the terrace.
The city of Horta lies on the island of Faial in the Azores. Located between 2 bays, you can do and see a lot in the city of Horta and the city’s rich history is reflected in the streets and the historical buildings. Founded five centuries ago, Horta and its port played an important role in European trade routes.
Today, the city is a haven for international yachting and a key location between the European and American continents. The marina is one of the busiest and visited ports in the world and undoubtedly one of the Azores’ most important locations.
There are many points of interest in the city itself such as the Igreja Matriz de São Salvador, the main church in the city, the Church and former convent of San Francisco, the Church of Nossa Senhora das Augústias as well as museums such as the Horta museum and the Scrimshaw Museum. The Sea Centre too can be found on the way to Monte da Guia, the volcanic cone which offers wonderful views over the bay and the city.
There are several parks which are well worth spending time in Horta such as Parque da Alagoa with its picnic area and children’s play area and Jardim da República, with wide paths, a little lake and a bandstand. Jardim Largo do Infante is also a popular park with the locals and has a view over the marina towards Pico Island. Finally, there is Jardim Botânico dedicated to scientific studies.
The island of Faial has plenty to offer its visitors, especially those looking for an active and nature-filled holiday. Its surrounding coastline offers many opportunities for water sports, fishing, boat rides and whale and dolphin watching, whereas the green countryside is perfect for walks, hiking, cycling and birdwatching.
