The Pousada at Geres offers a spectacular backdrop with plenty of valleys, rivers and hills, where you can relax and take in wonderful views from the terrace. After two nights here of walking and exploring the countryside, you head on over to Guimarães, one of Portugal's historical gems commonly known as 'birthplace of Portugal' and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can enjoy exploring its charming cobbled squares. Amares is the next stop on this route and with two nights here you can make the most of both the nearby natural surroundings  and nearby historic villages such as Braga, located only 16km away and overlooked by the beautiful Sanctuary of Bom Jesus. Lisbon is the best access point to explore the Alentejo region. After this it is on to the quiet town of Arraiolos, famous for its rug-making industry, and ideal for a relaxing break in a tranquil setting. Onwards to Vila Viçosa in the heart of the Alentejo region which is perfect for outdoor activities including hiking and birdwatching, for visiting the impressive Ducal Palace, or for exploring the nearby historic towns of Evora (for the Temple of Diana) and Borba. Your fifth night will be spent in the charming town of Beja whose picturesque historic centre is sure to delight anyone with an interest in architecture or history. The town's impressive 13th century castle is its crowning glory, along with the museums containing fascinating art collections, all of which can be enjoyed from your base in the town's former convent. The final two nights are based on the Algarve coast in the sleepy fisherman's town of Sagres. Once considered the 'world's end' due to its south-westerly location, Sagres played an important role in the Age of Discoveries. Today the town offers a peaceful refuge with quiet, sandy beaches and mild winter climate. From here it is a 90-minute drive to Faro airport for your return.
