The state-owned 'POUSADAS DE PORTUGAL' form a network of more than 40 establishments spread across the country from the green and rustic valleys of the Minho to the luxuriant mountains of Trás-os-Montes, or to Alentejo's golden plains and the Algarve coast with its fine sand and warm waters.

Since the creation of this network in 1942, each Pousada has become synonymous with the history, culture and traditions of its particular region. Recently reclassified into 4 distinct groups - Historic, Historic Design, Nature and Charm Pousadas, depending on the individual characteristics of each Pousada - examples of the 'POUSADAS DE PORTUGAL' now include:

Castles, palaces, monasteries and convents - all meticulously restored and converted
Country houses and mansions - constructed in the style of the region
Traditional hotels - often in superb locations and settings, some with as few as a dozen or so rooms.
