Parador de Oropesa

Spain – Castilla la Mancha – Toledo – Oropesa
Medieval castle-palace
4-star
According to legend, the small town of Oropesa, to the west of Toledo, was founded by the Greek hero Hercules in the second millennium before Christ. Whatever the truth of the story, Oropesa is nevertheless steeped in history. The medieval castle was heavily restored in the early 15th century, and is now occupied by this splendid Parador, just a few minutes from the main road from Madrid to Lisbon. From the castellated battlements and towers there are spectacular views across vineyards and olive groves to the distant Gredos Mountains. The interior of the Parador features a fine arcaded courtyard, both timbered and vaulted ceilings, and heavy drapes, lamps and large chests all add to the atmosphere. Outside, the hotel has a garden and a seasonal swimming pool. The restaurant specializes in the local cuisine, featuring such dishes as Perdiz escabechada (partridge casserole), Goulash de ciervo (venison goulash) and Suspiros de monja (‘monk’s whispers’, in other words, cream puffs).
