Parador de Cangas de Onís

Spain – Asturias – Cangas de Onís

Medieval monastery

4-star

Beautifully set on the verdant banks of the River Sella at the foot of the spectacular Picos de Europa, between Oviedo and Santander and a mile or so outside the little town of Cangas, this superb Parador was once the Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva. The buildings, which date from the 12th to the 18th century, have been declared a National Monument, and the Parador also takes in a modern wing - sympathetically designed in harmony with the historical originals – which houses most of the bedrooms. Here the visitor may find peace and tranquillity while wandering the gardens and cloisters, while enjoying all the luxuries of a 4-star hotel. Activities available nearby, especially in the Picos, include walking, fishing, riding, canoeing and mountain biking, and after such energetic outdoor activities guests will enjoy the Asturian dishes on offer in the restaurant, including El pote Asturiano (an Asturian broth), the incomparable Fabada (a stew made with local beans and meats) and local cheeses such as Cabrales and Beyo, all washed down with the regional speciality – cider.
